Question by Molly81: anyone with Rheumatoid arthritis notice increase in pain as prednisone tapers off?
I started on 15mg daily of prednisone for two weeks then 10mg for two weeks and felt great now I am on 5mg and pain is starting to come back, I really dont want to go back to how I was. I have two kids to look after!! What can I do? Anyone have any diet tips or any info about RA?? I will do anything not to feel the way I do!! Please help

Best answer:

Answer by ★☆W.a.b.b.y✿❀
Yes this happens to me. I don’t have RA (well I’ve been diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis, likely Psoriatic Arthritis and Sjogren’s Syndrome), but my condition is similar.

I started on 30mg and when I was back to 5mg my joints were swollen again.

Prednisone isn’t a long term option. It causes some terrible side effects like glaucoma and osteoporosis. Your doctor should be looking to get you on a DMARD like Plaquenil or Methotrexate or possibly a biologic like Enbrel or Humira. I only use Prednisone for flare ups.

Talk to your rheumatologist about an intra-muscular prednisone injection. These last longer and your body naturally tapers of it without that kickback flare.

As for diet, I’ve heard some people find a gluten free diet helping. There is also an anti-inflammatory diet (Google it). Generally avoid nightshade vegetables, eat more omega 3 and turmeric. It’s best if you keep a diary and see if you can notice any patterns.

Good luck.

….

What causes the pain of arthritic joints?
Before you can make a better determination of what will help relieve joint pain, it is essential to understand what causes it. While aging is a common cause of joint pain is not the only reason. Joint pain is the result of hard cartilage or use the connection of two or more bones, and this can occur at any age, especially in this era of active adults. Rigidity along with inflammation in the joints causes pain. The deterioration of cartilage in the joints may explain the loss of flexibility and rigidity that many people experience in their weight-bearing joints such as knees and hips. Chronic joint symptoms are the leading cause of disability in people over 18 years.

          ]]>

So if you do not recover from the bed as before, or if the ladder is not the only thing up the stairs creak when you may be quick to dismiss it as part of the aging process. But if the joints are creaking accompanied by acute pain and / or disseminated on the knees, ankles, back, shoulders, or wherever two or more bones are connected, the condition may require further attention. These conditions are not only painful, but to live with a significant decrease in the own quality of life and daily activities. You may find it difficult to participate in favorite activities such as gardening, golf or simply enjoy a stroll in the park. You have options and there are alternatives for you to consider.

So many people today are living in some state of chronic pain. I am one of those people. 10 years ago, I was formally diagnosed with fibromyalgia. In the research I conducted for fibromyalgia, I came to understand that no one really knows the exact cause of the pain. Viruses, trauma or injury, or bad dental work can be a few of the reasons, but, in many cases, fibromyalgia is often just a catchall term to diagnose pain that has no definitive explanation. Whether you have fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, back pain due to disc degeneration or chronic fatigue (just to name a few), there is hope. You may never be completely pain free, but, for the most part, you can feel a lot better. Watch this video for my strategies for conquering chronic pain. Related Articles: 1.
Arthritis is inflammation of the joints. It can occur anywhere in the body and, based on that, there are several types of arthritis. The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis, which is the common ailment of pain in the joints observed in elderly people. Other common types of arthritic ailments are rheumatoid arthritis and gout.

The word arthritis is derived from two root Greek words – arthros meaning ‘joint’ and itis meaning ‘inflammation’. Hence, arthritis literally translates as inflammation of the joints.

          ]]>

Arthritis is an auto-immune disease, which means, it is a disease in which the human body attacks itself. It begins in one or two joints where an acute pain is felt. This is the most miserable phase of arthritis.

Although the onset of this disease is generally after 50 in many Americans, there are cases in younger patients who need help as well. There is no complete cure, as this condition is generally viewed as a deterioration of joints. There are medications that are prescribed by doctors who treat patients, but there has been some controversy over the safety of the medicines. This has provided more fuel to those who are interested in home remedies in order to avoid synthetic solutions to joint pain and inflammation. Some patients have arthritis that is only troublesome with minor joint pain at times. Others can have such debilitating symptoms that they cannot work or function normally, making these individuals prime candidates for arthritis home remedies.

Read more on http://www.goherbalsupplements.com/boswellia.html

However, other conditions are more aggressive and require serious remedies that include prescription drugs and non-drug injections in joints as well as joint replacement surgeries. The pain associated with this disease can wear on a patient and create a constant state of fatigue and soreness. There are many options that doctors recommend but the drug related therapy usually has some risks involved such as liver damage or heart damage. It is a serious matter to consider when using prescription treatments. This has spurred more interest in arthritis home remedies and given rise to alternative methods of treatment.

There are many general treatment plans and a lot of natural health information that can help with the pain associated with arthritis as well as slow the disease in patients. One of the most obvious is the avenue of food intake for patients. Due to scientific studies, it can be determined that intakes of simple foods such as sugar and white flour can exacerbate joint pain and tenderness. A healthy diet focused on alleviating joint pain and swelling is among the foremost of arthritis home remedies. There are varying diet plans that can be found through online health sources.

Throughout my long nursing career I was never able to search out relief from my very own arthritis pain until I turned to natural or various medicine. Several folks have found there was a means to alleviate themselves from the crippling pain of arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis, though several people with rheumatoid arthritis have reported that a major diet modification has made their rheumatoid arthritis symptoms disappear and that they continue on their own rheumatoid arthritis treatment relieved of pain.

The arthritic joints typically seem to be even larger, are stiff and painful, and typically feel worse the more they are used because the day goes on. Hurtful arthritis pain is sometimes experienced whenever a stiff or swollen joint is employed even for the best tasks. Not like different varieties of arthritis, like rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondilytis, osteoarthritis isn’t systemic in basis in alternative words it can’t be detected by using blood tests for diagnosis as a result of it appears to be localized.

The cartilage is made up of chondrocytes, water, proteoglycans and collagen. The chondrocytes are basic cartilage cells and are essential for our balance and function. Collagen is the main protein found in all the connective tissues in the human body, including muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Proteoglycans are the terribly massive molecules that help to create up cartilage. They bond to water, which ensures there will be high-fluid content within the cartilage.

Generally, the possible causes and therefore the factors leading to the deterioration of cartilage in arthritis and specifically osteoarthritis are still not known. And injuries can sometimes be the start of a protracted-term arthritic disease process. Arthritis, or rather osteoarthritis, can develop several years later once a single traumatic injury to a joint or perhaps near a joint. And one potential reason behind arthritis is the inflammatory response because of the over-reaction of the immune system to an injury or other assault within the body, like an infection, even if minor.

Some individuals report that glucosamine, with or without chondroitin, helps and others say they tried them and that they didn’t facilitate them at all. To see if it may be allergy related – or helps, you can attempt avoiding the eight most allergic foods, one at a time. They’re wheat, that is the most allergenic of all, corn, eggs, milk, nuts, peanuts, fish and shellfish. Bear in mind that if you are taking a joint supplement it ought to facilitate to try to to 3 things – build up your cartilage, provide pain relief for your joints and enhance your flexibility and movement.

One successful natural treatment method involves avoiding all inflammatory foods. Another is to attempt massaging your fingers or different affected joints with virgin coconut oil once or twice a day. The supplements that will facilitate any disease or arthritic ailment include sublingual methylcobalamin, vitamin B12, not cyanocobalamin. It dissolve slowly below the tongue, not be chewed and vitamin D3 gel capsules, particularly if you cannot get a daily dose of 15 to 20 minutes or thus of the sun on your legs and arms thus you’ll build your own vitamin D3.

An acidic diet, which is created up of foods that are not alive, is taken into account to be inflammatory to the joints and different body processes. I started eating a diet of living foods (fruits, raw veggies, raw nuts and raw seeds), years ago, which caused my osteoarthritis to disappear and therefore relieve me of the crippling arthritis pain I had for years. If you try this diet it is best to strive it for a minimum of thirty days, thereby eliminating any foods that might be the culprits.

Millions of people around the world suffer from the painful symptoms of arthritis like decreased mobility, inflammation, and severe pain. This leads to not enjoying the things a person usually does and to participate in physical activities. Keeping up with friends is also a frustration like weekend bowling or out-of-town camping. Arthritis pain relief is treatments that can free a person from the agony of arthritis and enable a person to perform a task of daily living. This relief differs from every person’s case and the type of arthritis. Although there are many kinds of arthritis, the famous three are osteoarthritis, gouty arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
The use of NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug) which is anti-inflammatory is the most popular in arthritis pain relief. It is a prescription kind of arthritis pain relief; examples of this kind of medication are Celebrex, Vioxx, and Bextra. However, side effects have been reported in using these drugs such as gastrointestinal problems and increased risk of stroke or heart attack. Another form is the pain relievers. These are over-the-counter drugs (without prescription) such as aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen. Unfortunately, it is not recommended for prolonged use due to its adverse effect in liver and kidney. In worst cases of arthritis, narcotics and steroids are being prescribed by doctors for arthritis. Narcotics are very powerful painkillers; these are codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and propoxyphene.
However, the medication is habit forming and can lead to addiction. Steroids are very powerful anti-inflammatory medicines. It reduces the activity of anti-bodies that causes the inflammation. The drug is administered in a high dose and being tapered, otherwise it will cause harmful effects in the body.
Natural arthritis pain relief is now getting popular nowadays due to its efficacy and having less to no side effects. These are acupunctures and herbal medicines. However, it is always advisable to consult a physician before trying any alternative arthritis pain relief. Having arthritis is sometimes inevitable, especially if the type is hereditary, but to live a normal life is a personal choice. Arthritis pain relief is now here to make us live the way we used to.

Rheumatoid arthritis cause, diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment. Rheumatoid arthritis has no cure. Early, aggressive treatment of rheumatoid arthritis can help manage the disease, and better control pain, stiffness, and fatigue. Learn more about medications, surgery, diet, exercise, and pain relief options for rheumatoid arthritis.

TREATMENT OF RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

Nonpharmacologic therapies include treatments other than medications and are the foundation of treatment for all people with rheumatoid arthritis. There are a wide variety of nonpharmacologic therapies available.

Education and counseling — Education and counseling can help you to better understand the nature of rheumatoid arthritis and cope with the challenges of this condition. You and your healthcare providers can work together to formulate a long-term treatment plan, define reasonable expectations, and evaluate both standard and alternative treatment options.

No pharmacologic measures such as biofeedback and cognitive behavioral therapy can be very effective for controlling rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. These measures can reduce pain and disability and improve self-esteem. Programs on topics such as self-management skills, social support, biofeedback, and psychotherapy are offered by the Arthritis Foundation and by many hospitals and clinics. These programs have been shown to reduce pain, depression, and disability in people with arthritis and to allow them to gain some control over their illness.

Rest — Fatigue is a common symptom of rheumatoid arthritis. Resting inflamed joints by taking naps often helps restore energy. You can alternate rest with activity, when possible.

Exercise — Pain and stiffness often prompt people with rheumatoid arthritis to become inactive. Unfortunately, inactivity can lead to a loss of joint motion, contractions, and a loss of muscle strength. Weakness, in turn, decreases joint stability and further increases fatigue.

Regular exercise can help prevent and reverse these effects. Several different kinds of exercise can be beneficial, including range-of-motion exercises to preserve and restore joint motion, exercises to increase strength (isometric, isotonic, and isokinetic exercises), and exercises to increase endurance (walking, swimming, and cycling.

Exercise programs for people with rheumatoid arthritis should be designed by a physical therapist and tailored to the severity of your condition, your build, and your former activity level. A separate article discusses exercise and arthritis. (See “Patient information: Arthritis and exercise”.

Physical therapies — Physical therapy can relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and help preserve joint structure and function for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Specific types of physical therapy are used to address specific effects of rheumatoid arthritis:

The application of heat or cold can relieve pain or stiffness

Ultrasound may reduce inflammation of the sheaths surrounding tendons (tenosynovitis)

Passive and active exercises can improve and maintain range of motion of the joints

Rest and rest splinting can reduce joint pain and improve joint function

Finger splinting can prevent deformities and improve hand function

Relaxation techniques can relieve secondary muscle spasm

Physical therapy may also include a consultation with a podiatrist who can make foot orthotics (devices that ensure correct position of the foot) and supportive footwear.

Nutrition and dietary therapy — People with active rheumatoid arthritis sometimes lose their appetite or are unable to eat an adequate amount of food. Dietary therapy helps to ensure that you eat an adequate amount of calories and nutrients. However, weight loss may be recommended for overweight and obese people to reduce stress on inflamed joints. (See “Patient information: Weight loss treatments”.

People with rheumatoid arthritis have a higher risk of developing coronary artery disease. High blood cholesterol is one risk factor for coronary disease that can respond to changes in diet. A nutritionist can recommend specific foods to eat or avoid to achieve a desirable cholesterol level. (See “Patient information: High cholesterol and lipids (hyperlipidemia).

Changes in diet have been investigated as treatments for rheumatoid arthritis. The addition of fish oils and some plant oils, such as borage seed oil, have modestly improved arthritis pain and joint swelling in one study. However, there is no diet that can cure rheumatoid arthritis. No herbal or nutritional supplements, such as cartilage or collagen, can cure rheumatoid arthritis; these treatments can be dangerous and are not usually recommended. (See “Patient information: Complementary therapies for rheumatoid arthritis”.

Measures to reduce bone loss — Rheumatoid arthritis causes bone loss, which can lead to osteoporosis. Bone loss is more likely in people who are inactive. The use of glucocorticoids, such as prednisone, further increases the risk of bone loss, especially in postmenopausal women. (See “Patient information: Bone density testing”.

Find powerful herbal remedies

Natural Remedies for Arthritis

Several measures can minimize the bone loss associated with steroid therapy:

Use the lowest possible dose of glucocorticoids for the shortest possible time, when possible, to minimize bone loss.

Consume an adequate amount of calcium (1000 to 1500 mg/day) and vitamin D (400 to 800 IU/day), either in the diet or by taking supplements. (See “Patient information: Calcium and vitamin D for bone health”.

Medications called bisphosphonates, such as alendronate (Fosamax®), risedronate (Actonel®), ibandronate (Boniva®) and etidronate (Didronel®), can reduce bone loss. Use of calcitonin in the form of a nasal spray (Miacalcin®) can also reduce bone loss caused by glucocorticoids. (See “Patient information: Osteoporosis prevention and treatment”.
