For rheumatoid arthritis in the early stages, an anti-inflammatory is usually the first choice. Typical anti-inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis medications include aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen.

Aspirin, as most people know, can cause stomach upset and eventually ulcers. Ibuprofen has caused liver damage, anemia, intestinal bleeding, diminished vision and meningitis. People who have aspirin sensitive asthma may also be sensitive to ibuprofen. It has not been proven safe for use by children and should not be used by pregnant women or nursing mothers. These side effects and possible dangers are some of the reasons that people look for alternative therapies for rheumatoid arthritis.

Naproxen is another of the fast acting or anti-inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis medications. In clinical trials of patients taking naproxen, one to ten percent experienced one or more of the following adverse reactions: heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, vertigo, itching, sweating, hearing problems, visual problems, cardiovascular edema, heart palpitations, vomiting, gastro-intestinal bleeding, ulcers, anemia and other side effects.

Natural anti-inflammatory botanicals, nutritional supplements and herbal remedies may be considered as alternative therapies for rheumatoid arthritis.

Zinc, an essential mineral, has been shown to be capable of inhibiting the inflammatory response, but most studies of zinc supplementation in rheumatoid arthritis patients have been inconclusive. Like many supplements and alternative therapies for rheumatoid arthritis, zinc seems to help some people and has no side effects, unless high doses are used.

Botanicals and herbal remedies which may be considered as supplemental or alternative therapies for rheumatoid arthritis include ginger root, bromelain, feverfew, turmeric and mangosteen.

Ginger, turmeric and mangosteen have all been used historically by native peoples to treat pain and reduce swelling. The effectiveness of ginger as an alternative to rheumatoid arthritis medications has been studied in clinical trials and indicates that it does show promise.

A small clinical study (18 patients) concluded that turmeric was nearly as effective as one of the anti-inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis medications, but it is not clear whether this was a placebo effect, since there was no control group. Additionally there is some disagreement concerning whether it should be used in the powdered form or as a tea.

Mangosteen is a relatively new and exciting addition to the western world as an anti-inflammatory. It was used historically by the native peoples of Thailand, Vietnam, India, China, Malaysia and the Philippines to treat a variety of bodily aches and pains.

The mangosteen is a fruit and its most readily available form is a drink that contains a puree of the fruit and its rind. It is important when purchasing mangosteen products to consider only the ones that include the rind, because anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory components and even Cox inhibitors are concentrated in it, as well as numerous vitamins and minerals.

While no human clinical studies have been completed to date concerning mangosteen’s efficacy as an alternative or supplement to rheumatoid arthritis medications, numerous laboratory studies have shown that certain of the “xanthones” (powerful anti-oxidants) are anti-inflammatory and Cox-2 inhibitors.

Alternative Therapies for Rheumatoid Arthritis

According to Dr J. Frederic Templeman, M.D. in response to the question “Will the Mangosteen help with pain?” he states: “…Presumptively the mangosteen inhibits the pain-related action of the Cox-2 enzyme in the CNS [Central Nervous System] and blocks pain impulse generation.

So yes, the mangosteen may significantly reduce any pain you might be experiencing.” [End Quote]

Prescription Cox-2 inhibitors are being shunned by a great many people due to their numerous undesirable and serious side effects. Indeed, the Cox-2 inhibitor, Vioxx(TM), was taken off of the market worldwide for a time because of the health dangers associated with it and has embroiled Merck in a nightmare of legal woes.

Lab rats or cell lines have been used to conduct mangosteen research and there were no reported side effects. It is believed that because the mangosteen contains the anti-ulcer compounds ascorbic acid, beta carotene, fiber and pectin, it would not have any of the gastric side effects common in anti-inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis medications.

Other compounds found in the fruit may promote heart health and are anti-hypertensive, so health problems associated with prescription Cox-2 inhibiting rheumatoid arthritis medications should not occur with mangosteen usage.

It is possible that mangosteen could one day be considered an effective supplemental or alternative treatments for rheumatoid arthritis. Hopefully, at some point, clinical studies can confirm this, but research is expensive and usually funded by pharmaceutical companies, which is why there are so few studies of the effectiveness of herbal and botanical remedies, particularly in the United States.

Studies of alternative therapies for rheumatoid arthritis have shown that diet plays a possible role. Patients who have used a diet that excluded common food allergens such as grains, milk, nuts, beef and eggs reported being symptom free for as long as five years, as long as they stuck to the diet.

In addition to or as an alternative to anti-inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis medications, some doctors prescribe corticosteroids like prednisone. But, while these may be effective for short-term relief of symptoms, long-term use of corticosteroids is known to cause many other health problems including diabetes.

In addition, they tend to lose their effectiveness, and can be habit forming. When a patient has been taking corticosteroid rheumatoid arthritis medications, they must be “weaned” off of them, meaning the medication must be gradually reduced before switching to alternative therapies for rheumatoid arthritis.

Question by mjudmill: Is there an alternative to oral Cortisone to help Rheumatoid arthritis?
I am finding it dfficult to get my GP to continue to prescribe Cortisone for me. Other treatments haven’t worked, is there an alternative?

Best answer:

Answer by imsety
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Treatment can help the pain and swelling. This might slow down or stop joint damage. You may feel better and find it easier to move around. Your doctor might also suggest anti-rheumatic drugs called DMARDs (disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs). These can slow damage from the disease. Other medicines known as corticosteroids (like prednisone) can ease swelling. Another kind of drug, called a biologic response modifier, blocks the damage done by the immune system. These may help people with mild-to-moderate RA when other treatments have not worked.
I hope this helps you. And good luck.

Anxiety and depression are hardly rare, especially these days. However, if these situations are accompanied by chronic pain throughout your body, if even a slight touch causes pain and discomfort and if you’re having problems concentrating and remembering things, you may be suffering from fibromyalgia.

This is a condition that affects approximately 3% of the population, and the overwhelming majority of victims are women. There is no cure for this condition at present – mainly because medical researchers are not clear what it is – but there ways of providing chronic pain relief.

Other Symptoms

In addition to pain and mental confusion, patients with this condition may also experience:

- sleep difficulties
- irritable bowel syndrome or other LGI issues
- numbness or tingling
- low blood sugar levels
- difficulty urinating
- muscle spasms
- heart palpitations

For most people suffering from fibromyalgia, pain relief is the top priority, however.

What Causes It?

Unfortunately, medical researchers are not clear as to what causes fibromyalgia. Some believe it is nothing more that a psychological condition; a physical examination usually reveals nothing out of the ordinary. It has been associated with rheumatoid arthritis as well as lupus, both of which are inflammatory conditions.

Current theory suggests that it may be caused by a condition that makes the brain hypersensitive to pain signals, resulting in a much lower-than-normal pain threshold. Some individuals may be genetically predisposed as well; researchers have noticed that it runs in families. Another culprit is a dysfunction when it comes to the secretion of chemical neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin.

Fibromyalgia Pain Relief

Psychotherapy has been shown to be effective in some cases; patients who undergo this type of alternative pain relief therapy greatly benefit from an exercise program as well. Pharmaceutical treatments include: the use of anti-depressants, anti-seizure medication, dopamine replacements, tranquilizers and even opioid medications. However, any and all of these can produce unwanted side effects; the latter in particular has the potential to create dependency.

Alternative Pain Relief

Increasingly, non-pharmaceutical alternative pain relief methods are showing exceptional promise. New research demonstrates that the human body has an amazing ability to heal itself. Natural, non-chemical chronic pain relief can be stimulated through the use of massage (something that indigenous peoples have known for centuries) as well as the use of light and sound. One exciting development is the use of magnets. While magnetic energy does little on its own, when used in combination with these other elements, it has been demonstrated to provide fast and effective fibromyalgia pain relief in chronic sufferers.

The word “osteoporosis” literally means “porous bones.” Osteoporosis (pronounced OSS-tee-o-puh-RO-sis) occurs when bones begin to lose some of their essential elements. The most important of these elements is calcium. Over time, bone mass decreases. As a result, bones lose their strength, become fragile, and break easily. In extreme cases, even a sneeze or a sudden movement may be enough to break a bone.

Causes of Osteoporosis

Causes of osteoporosis are heredity and lifestyle. Whites and Asians, tall and thin women and those with a history of osteoporosis are those at the highest risk of getting osteoporosis. The behavioral causes of increasing the risk of osteoporosis are smoking, alcohol abuse, prolonged inactivity and a diet low in calcium. There are also some diseases that are associated with aging that cause osteoporosis, which include kidney failure, liver disease, cancers, Paget´s disease, endocrine or glandular diseases, gonadal failure and rheumatoid arthritis. There are some medications like steroids, seizure drugs, thyroid hormone and blood thinners that are also found to cause osteoporosis.

Symptoms and Treatment

Usually, osteoporosis does not cause any symptoms at first. Osteoporosis is often called the “silent” disease, because bone loss occurs without symptoms. People often don’t know they have the disease until a bone breaks, frequently in a minor fall that wouldn’t normally cause a fracture. Many people confuse osteoporosis with arthritis and believe they can wait for symptoms such as swelling and joint pain to occur before seeing a doctor. It should be stressed that the mechanisms

Risk Factor of Osteoporosis

1. A diet low in calcium, either as an adult or as a child, can increase your risk of developing osteoporosis.

2. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. Lack of vitamin D is another risk factor for developing osteoporosis.

3. Smoking cigarettes interferes with the body’s ability to absorb calcium.

4. Excessive alcohol consumption also makes it difficult for calcium to be absorbed. Bones will be weaker without sufficient calcium.

Treatment of Osteoporosis

Although osteoporosis has no cure, several types of medications are available to reduce the rate of bone loss, increase bone density, and reduce the number of fractures. In general, they work in two main ways: they lessen bone break down (anti-resorptive agents) or they stimulate the formation of new bone (anabolic agents).

Hormone therapy

Hormone therapy (HT) was once the mainstay of treatment for osteoporosis. But because of concerns about its safety and because other treatments are available, the role of hormone therapy in managing osteoporosis is changing. Most problems have been linked to certain oral types of HT, either taken in combination with progestin or alone. In addition, it is important to get enough vitamin D. A daily intake of 400 IU, but no more than 800 IU, each day is recommended. Obtaining adequate amounts of vitamin D from our food may be difficult. The main sources of dietary vitamin D are fortified milk (100 IU/cup), egg yolks (25 IU/yolk) and oily fish (vitamin D content varies).

This article describes an overview of natural therapies panic attacks alternative treatment to counter panic attacks and anxiety, also known as agoraphobia.
Some therapies are listed here, in this article we will review some oh them.

. Diet and Vitamins.
• Some herbs that can be useful.
• Some behavioral therapies
• Cognitives therapies: Dance, Exercise, relaxation, music, autohypnosis.

Cognitive behavioral therapy.

A form of counseling called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has proven superior to placebo in controlling symptoms of panic disorder. In a controlled trial, six months of CBT produced a response rate of 39.5%, compared with only 13% in the placebo group.
Combination therapies to reduce anxiety Therapeutic researchers published a study testing the immediate effects of brief massage, muscle relaxation with visual imagery, and a session of social support group for job stress among health workers. All groups showed decreased anxiety, depression, fatigue and confusion, and greater force, suggesting that all treatments were equally effective.

Other researchers found that both relaxation (treatment) and therapeutic touch (placebo, control group) produced significant reductions in anxiety in 31 people in a Veterans Administration psychiatric center. Relaxation, music therapy and music therapy-video are also useful in producing a relaxation response in a study of individuals undergoing cardiac surgery.

Cognitive Therapy as natural therapies panic attacks alternative treatment

Another group of researchers found that both targeted and standard cognitive therapy worked well for panic disorder. Both groups reported a significant decrease in panic, and over 84% in both groups were free of panic attacks, a year later.

Dance as natural therapies panic attacks alternative treatment.

Another group of researchers studied the effects of modern dance on anxiety. The anxiety was assessed before and after an educational program of 3 months. Modern dance class was compared with a group of physical education, a music group and a control group of mathematics. Dance training significantly reduced anxiety.

It has also been scientifically investigated the use of aerobic dance exercise based on 19 people with rheumatoid arthritis participated in a fortnight for 12 weeks. Ten people who served as controls. Besides the improvement in motion and decreased pain, the treatment group showed positive changes in anxiety and other negative feelings.

Researchers have also found that people who suffered panic attacks often went to the hospital emergency room, fearing they were having a heart attack. In a study of 33 people who came to the emergency room of a hospital, half were given peace and the other half were advised to reexpose to the situation as soon as possible and wait there until their decline in anxiety. Over the next 6 months, people who had reassured experienced an increase in behaviors associated with panic. Those who had received exposure (desensitization) showed a significant decrease in panic behavior.

Distraction

The distraction device may be better to deal with changing situations discussion of what happened. The exchange of ideas on the problems of the day can worsen mood, according to a study of 79 men who followed his biggest surprise of the day, how they coped with it, and what their mood was that day. How to check the reliability, their wives also kept notes on what the mood of their husbands were. The most effective coping strategies in terms of mood elevation, were the distraction (eg, cleaning the house, meditating in silence, or lifting weights at the gym), relaxation, and acceptance of the unlucky day. The distraction allows the screen to clear mind and allows the mind to focus on things less aggravating.

Exercise

Positive changes in anxiety and tension were observed after an exercise program of 12 weeks for people with arthritis. The exercise has also been found useful in significantly reducing anxiety in women during radiation treatment for breast cancer.
Other researchers completed a meta-analysis of 15 studies on the psychological effects of exercise programs in people diagnosed with coronary heart disease. They found a positive effect size for both anxiety and depression.

These same researchers examined the effects of a single session of physical activity among older participants. Sixteen trained women completed an abbreviated Profile of Mood States before and immediately after a session of 75 minutes of aerobic line dancing. A series of one-way analysis of variance with repeated measures pre-and post-test results showed a significant decrease in scores on the tension.

In another study reported the effect of resistance exercise in women in a state of anxiety and ambulatory blood pressure. Young women under high-intensity exercise significantly reduced stress favored participants in the exercise groups less intense. However, the relationship between stress and anxiety / depression / hostility weakened at the end of the training period, but strengthened in the exercise groups less intense. The study provided evidence to support the hypothesis that, in an adolescent population, aerobic exercise has positive effects on welfare.

17 years ago researchers also provided evidence for the use of exercise as a reducer of anxiety. Eleven women and 25 male college athletes completed college sessions of 30 minutes of leg ergometry or weight training cycle in a random order on separate days. State anxiety and systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure was measured before exercise and exercise 20 to 60 minutes later. The anxiety increased significantly after weight training, but decreased significantly below baseline 50 minutes later.

Homeopathy as natural therapies panic attacks alternative treatment.

Individually selected homeopathic remedies are used on an outpatient basis for the treatment of 12 adults who had social phobia, panic disorder or major depression. The overall response rates were 58% depending on the clinical global improvement scale.

Meditation

Clinical investigators found that a reduction in current, voltage limited group over time based on mindfulness meditation significantly reduced anxiety and panic for 22 people with anxiety disorders.

Music

A convenience sample of 97 adults receiving chemotherapy for the first time was allocated to each experimental group that offers music and recorded a message from your doctor, significant results were found in the Spielberger State Anxiety Inventory (compared with the initial assessment ) for the recorded music group, but not for the control group. These preliminary “results indicate that this simple and cost-effective intervention can reduce anxiety to receive music therapy.

Relaxation

Using a conceptual framework of holism Weber (1996) investigated the effects of relaxation exercises on anxiety levels in a general hospital psychiatric unit. The researcher used a convenience sample of 39 participants. Anxiety levels were measured before and after relaxation exercises using my portion of the state of the State Anxiety Inventory-Trait. The treatment included progressive muscle relaxation, breathing, meditation, guided imagery and soothing music. There was a significant reduction in the level of anxiety in the post.

Auto-hypnosis

Researchers tested the hypothesis that the techniques of self-hypnosis relaxation would have a positive effect on individuals with mental and physical condition following coronary bypass surgery. The researchers used a prospective, randomized (n = 32) and participants followed from 1 day before surgery until discharge. The treatment group was taught self-hypnosis techniques, relaxation before the operation, while the control group received usual care. People who were taught self-hypnosis were significantly more relaxed after surgery compared with the control group. drug requirements for pain were also significantly lower for treatment group.

Therapeutic Touch

Another research team studied the effect of therapeutic touch compared with a back massage in the level of anxiety in 105 institutionalized elderly. A double-blind, three-group experimental design was used. . The anxiety level of subjects who received therapeutic touch was significantly lower than for those receiving a back rub without therapeutic touch. The researchers suggested that therapeutic touch has some potential to improve the quality of life in this population.

Most children with scoliosis have mild curves and won’t need aggressive treatment. When a curve is suspected or confirmed, follow-up screenings are critically important, especially during times of rapid adolescent growth. With follow-up screenings, clinicians can gain information about curve progression. This helps determine the best treatment approach.

It is not difficult to identify the most important sources of man-made or anthropogenic radiation. Most of the collective dose from diagnostic radiology comes from procedures such as CT, interventional radiology and barium enemas. Advances in radiological diagnostic technology have radically transformed medical practice in recent years and there has been a rapid increase particularly in the application of CT.

Spinal fusion is a “welding” process by which two or more of the small bones (vertebrae) that make up the spinal column are fused together with bone grafts and internal devices such as metal rods to heal into a single solid bone. The surgery of Spinal Fusion eliminates motion between vertebrae segments, which may be desirable when motion is the cause of significant pain. It also stops the progress of a spinal deformity such as scoliosis. A spinal fusion takes away some of the patient’s spinal flexibility. Most spinal fusions involve relatively small spinal segments and thus do not limit motion very much.

Chiropractic care for newborns aims to correct misalignments in the spine by light pushing of the affected part. It is a gentle way of correcting misalignments that might have occurred during the childbirth. This may prove helpful to prevent scoliosis and other problems of the nervous system occurring in later life. Breech delivery is not something an expectant mother wants and therefore the Webster Technique may prove to be helpful to avoid such type of complications.

One of the factors in the treatment guidelines states that the causes of the back suffering should be put in specific categories such as mechanical pain like vertebra, disc, facet joints, nerve root, spine process and traverse process; congenital conditions like scoliosis; infections, tumors and diseases; and injuries like sports injuries or whiplash.
One necessary thing is stating the cause of the back pain and putting it in the exact category where it’s located, like back pain caused by a congenital condition like scoliosis, or pain caused by mechanical reasons, such as nerve roots, facet joints, disc, traverse process, spinous process or vertebra.

Acquired disorders- These are medical problems that you might have been born with such as scoliosis(an abnormal curvature of the spine) to other problems that you acquired, such as arthritis(osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis) which can lead to fractures; musculoskeletal pain syndromes such as fibromyalgia, spinal stenosis (Narrowing of the spinal canal putting pressure on spine or nerves); and even pregnancy.

Orthopedic massage therapy is also beneficial for people suffering from medical conditions such as scoliosis, stroke and other complications of aging. So if you have an elderly parent or a loved one is known to have such ailment, such therapy can help in easing their movements and improving their states of health. Doctors even recommend such treatments for their patients, and the results are promising.

Other sources of back pain include spinal tumors, scoliosis, or fractures in the vertebrae. For certain individuals spinal fusion can give almost immediate relief, although there is always the risk of post surgical complications as well as the possibility that the spinal surgery is not successful in correcting the back pain problem.

For 25 years Robert Reid kept active by practicing karate, playing football, softball, and basketball. But, his love for sports took a toll on his body. Robert developed arthritis in his knees and would need surgery.

“The knee pain was tremendous, you always have that constant, constant ache that throbbing. I actually got to the point I was probably popping Advil’s like M&M’s,” recalls Robert.

To alleviate Robert’s pain doctors performed a partial knee resurfacing.

“A knee has 3 separate compartments, and when only one part of the knee is diseased we have the opportunity to just replace that part of the knee; and instead of fully replacing it, I’m able to simply resurface the end of the bone with metal on one side and a high density medical plastic on the other side and leave the rest of the knee completely intact and leave all the ligaments and the rest of the person’s feeling of their knee as if it was their old knee,” explains orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Ira Kirschenbaum.

Because only the damaged surface of the knee is replaced during a partial knee resurfacing, trauma is minimized to healthy bone and tissue.

“When you do a total knee replacement the whole knee gets chopped out and if it fails in 10 years, 12 years or whenever you have to put in another total knee, you’ve burnt every bridge,” reports Dr. Kirschenbaum.

According to Dr. Kirschenbaum, partial knee resurfacing would not be an effective treatment option for people suffering from severe arthritis and those patients battling rheumatoid arthritis. “Anyone with the osteoarthritis restricted primarily to one part of the joint is an excellent candidate and that represents probably 70% of all knee arthritis that’s out there.”

Dr. Kirschenbaum explains there are three phases of rehabilitation…first phase is healing of the wound, second, is achieving motion and third, is regaining the function you had prior to the surgery. By the end of the second week, most patients are 95% there with motion and function. And by 4 to 6 weeks most patients are resuming their usual activities.

Symptoms of knee arthritis include pain with activities, limited range of motion, stiffness of the knee, swelling of the joint, tenderness along the joint, a feeling the joint may “give out,” or deformity of the joint like knock-knees or bow-legs.

Hip arthritis is of two types. Young and middle aged persons suffer from secondary osteoarthritis. Primary osteoarthritis can affect middle aged and elderly. Surgery in this group of relatively younger patients requires newer techniques like hip resurfacing.

Hip Resurfacing is the preferred option in young & middle aged males with primary

Types of Hip arthritis

Hip arthritis is classified as Primary and secondary Osteoarthritis.

Primary osteoarthritis is age related wear and tear arthritis. It is rare in India.

Secondary osteoarthritis occurs at a younger age and is more common. Rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, traumatic arthritis and other connective tissue disorders like SLE, Psoriasis etc. all lead to secondary osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto immune disorder, affects all joints particularly the small joints but also does not spare the hip and knees.

Avascular necrosis is a condition that reduces the blood supply to the end of the bone. It affects patients with excess alcohol intake, consuming steroids, connective tissue disorders like SLE. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a connective tissue disorder affecting mainly young women A photo sensitive rash on the cheeks, renal involvement and arthritis are some notable features. Avascular necrosis affects a proportion of the patients with SLE.

Gaucher’s disease is a rare genetic storage disorder.

Post traumatic arthritis occurs after a severe injury to the hip. Fractures of the ball (top of the femur) or socket (acetabulum) can lead to arthritis after inadequate treatment.

Hip arthritis is very disabling as it is a small ball and socket joint. In advanced disease a total hip replacement was recommended by Orthopaedic surgeons until recently. The ideal age for a hip replacement is 74 years.

Surgical solutions

are the mainstay of treatment as conservative measures fail to relieve pain. Total Hip replacement (THR) is a time tested operation and has a success rate of 93 % survivor ship at 10 years.

Who needs a hip resurfacing?

In India, many young patients with ankylosing spondylitis, avascular necrosis, post septic arthritis, post injury suffer from hip arthritis and are advised a hip replacement for disabling pain. Thus many hip replacement operations are performed in younger patients. The surgery should cater to the enhanced demands on an artificial joint by younger and more active patients. Naturally an operation designed for Western elderly patients is not suitable for younger patients.

  Hip Resurfacing vs Hip Replacement

In this operation the ball shaped upper end of the thigh bone (femur) and the socket (acetabulum) are replaced. The ball is replaced with a long metal stem that is fixed into the upper end if the thigh bone. Its upper spherical end articulates with a cup shaped polyethylene socket that is cemented into the pelvis.

Conventional hip replacements sacrifice a great deal of normal bone as the head, neck, and upper part of the thigh bone is removed for implantation of the prosthesis. Moreover wear debris from the poly-etheylene liner lead to osteolysis and bone loss. When this first hip is to be changed or revised after its lifespan more bone loss occurs. Conventional hips have a small ball to reduce friction and wear, but the ill effect of this is an increased risk of dislocation. An average dislocation rate of 3- 4 % has been reported. These implants do not last very longer than 20 years and revision rates of 50% at 20 years have been reported. Survival rates are less satisfactory for the relatively younger active patients. Thus a total hip replacement is not an ideal implant for younger patients less than fifty years old who need a new hip.

Problems with conventional total hip replacement:

Excessive bone sacrifice and loss Increased risk of dislocation Patients cannot squat or sit cross legged on the floor with out the risk of dislocation. Range of movement is less Patients cannot involve in sports Poor survival in young and active patients they require earlier revision. Revision surgery is difficult The hip feels less like a normal hip The cup wears with time and plastic from it harms bone Change in length of the leg after surgery leading to leg length discrepancy.

Why remove normal bone when only the surface of the ball is bad?

This is the logic behind hip resurfacings. This bone preserving hip resurfacing involves replacing only the diseased bony surfaces of the head of femur and acetabulum. This involves sculpting the head of the femur and covering it with a metal cap and fixing an uncemented socket into the acetabulum to receive the head.

Hip Resurfacing- A bone preserving hip replacement!

Preservation of bone and less stress shielding makes it easy to revise this hip if needed. The large head size provides a very stable joint and recreates the sensation of a normal hip joint. Patients have gone back to playing Judo and Squash after this operation. Advances metallurgy makes the metal on metal articulation likely to survive longer in the young and active patient. With less metal inside the bone and less invasion of the medullary cavity of the femur, the risk of infection is reduced. Rehabilitation is faster and better.

Advantages of hip resurfacing:

Allows the patient to squat and sit cross legged on the floor safely Allows a normal range of movement Sacrifices only the surface diseased bone and preserves normal bone Imparts a more normal sensation The joint is likely to last longer even in younger and active patients. Earlier and faster rehabilitation Less risk of dislocation Easier to revise if needed. No leg length discrepancy.

In summary a Hip Resurfacing offers several advantages in young patients in young patients.

Although traditional medicine cannot replace modern medicine as far as diagnosis, investigation and emergency care are concerned, certain ‘alternative’ systems which focus on overall health, have shown remarkable and swift results even in chronic illnesses like diabetes, leucoderma, cancer as well as hard to cure diseases like arthritis, asthma and even AIDS.

Ayurveda

Ayurveda, literally meaning the science of life, aims at healing the individual as a whole, instead of merely at the molecular level. This ancient healing system is based on the theory that everything is composed of panchamahabhutas, or the five basic elements (akaash, jal, vayu, agni, dharti). The main source of our knowledge of Ayurveda is the Atharva Veda, which dates back to around 1200 BC.

Find Alternative Medicine Programs in the United States and Canada. With the phenomenal expansion of complementary and holistic therapies, there are growing numbers of healing arts schools that now offer alternative medicine programs to both practitioners and prospective students searching for unique career-training opportunities.

Of the numerous alternative medicine programs – massage therapy, holistic health, energy healing, and nutritional consulting are some of the more popular academic programs available today.

Alternative Healing Education

Alternative healing education provides courses to students that may lead to certificates, diplomas and degrees in the healing arts. In many instances, alternative healing education classes can encompass broad spectrums of noninvasive healing modalities such as aromatherapy, Ayurveda, energy healing therapies, herbology and herbal medicine, chiropractic, acupressure, and naturopathy – to mention just a few. Some alternative healing education programs enable students to sit for local and national licensure exams; as in the cases of massage therapy, acupuncture, and chiropractic. Additionally, a number of alternative healing education programs include certificate courses that help students to become certified in a wide variety of healing arts

Alternative Medicine Courses

Depending on your career interest, successful completion of one or more alternative medicine courses can lead to professions in naturopathy, natural health, homeopathy, massage therapy and Oriental medicine – to list just a few. Alternative medicine courses in natural health, for example, can help students achieve required education to become natural health consultants, educators or natural health technicians. Naturopathy schools that provide alternative medicine courses are commonly comprised of comprehensive studies in naturopathy, phytotherapy, botanical and herbal medicine, aromatherapy, and other Chinese medicine subjects.

Alternative Medicine Colleges

Before registering in the wide expand of alternative medicine colleges, you should first determine which alternative medicine practice you would like to enter. For example, if you interested in chiropractic, be sure that the selection of alternative medicine colleges in which you choose to enroll offer this course of study. Some alternative medicine colleges provide training in a diverse range of health therapies including education in pathology-specific treatments, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Studies offered through alternative medicine colleges in this area may include diverse curriculums in botanical or herbal medicine, supplements and vitamins, hydrotherapy, mind-body therapies, Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, homeopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture and other massage therapies.

Alternative Medicine practitioners are realizing that healing herbs should be part of their arsenal against disease. The newest touted natural herb is Capsicum, found in cayenne pepper. It has many benefits whether taken internally or externally. When taken internally, capsicum is an antibacterial which will encourage healing and deflect infections while slowing the absorption of fat in the intestines to help fight obesity. Because this natural herbal remedy is a stimulant, it improves circulation. Capsicum will also stabilize blood pressure and lower cholesterol. Herbalists are finding capsicum is useful in fighting a variety of ailments.

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly when the herb cayenne pepper had its start as an herbal remedy. There are no writings on Capsicum in ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, or Persia. The best guess that historians are willing to put forward is that cayenne went to India and China some time in the 14th or 15th century. It is believed that Europe started cultivation around the 16th century. Today cayenne is still a popular herb in the food industry. Now because of well designed and implemented clinical studies it is widely accepted as an effective alternative medicine. Pharmacopoeias of leading medical clinics from Austria, Egypt, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland support this finding.

The natural healing herb Capsicum contained in cayenne pepper is loaded with Vitamin A which is necessary for smooth skin and vision. Vitamin A has been found to be the most powerful killer of free radicals, which bombard us on a daily basis. Vitamin C is the other proponent active in capsicum. The healing properties of Vitamin C are clearing blood clots, eliminating plaque from the arteries, healing wounds and fighting colds. By starving them of oxygen, capsicum causes tumor cells to die.

Capsicum can cause a burning sensation but in time you will get used to it. The active ingredients in the herbal remedy, Capsicum, stimulate the brain and salivary glands releasing endorphins into your body. Endorphins are nature’s natural painkiller giving us the feeling of pleasure. Capsicum is also the main ingredient in pain killing rubs for Arthritis and Diabetes nerve damage.

Many herbalists today recommend capsicum for such ailments as cold hands and feet, sluggish metabolisms, obesity and respiratory tract infections. Use it externally for arthritis, sore back muscles, rheumatism or sprains and bruises. One suggestion for cold feet is to wear a thin pair of socks, then get a thicker pair of socks, sprinkle the inside with cayenne pepper and put them on over the thin socks. The pepper will send a warm soothing sensation to the soles of your feet.

An interesting study was done to see if capsicum would irritate or cause ulceration in the intestines. On the contrary it was found that the herb did not harm the tract but sped up the healing of ulcers by secreting more mucosa, the protective lining of the intestines.

A very surprising result of many of the clinical tests is that capsicum raise the metabolic rate and is effective in burning the bodies fat. This has many implications for people with obesity problems. Early indications also show that capsicum slows the absorption of fat in the small intestine. These studies are on going but there are some weight loss products with capsicum that are available in your health food store.

As a tropical analgesic, capsicum, the natural herbal remedy has received wide attention by qualified health professionals. It has shown to relieve the pain of shingles as well as other skin ailments. The FDA has approved it to be used for these problems as well as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Studies are being done to see if the herb can be effective in treating psoriasis and fibromyalgia.

When using it topically a redness or burning sensation may sometimes occur. This will disappear in two to three weeks time. Once you have received control of the pain capsicum must be used continuously for the relief to be sustained.

If you are diabetic take 3 capsules a day to help bring down your blood sugar levels. Capsicum will affect the breakdown of carbohydrates which will control the fluctuation of sugar levels after eating meals. Of course, this is still being studied in clinics around the world.

So now we have received another healing herb from Mother Nature’s food pharmacy. Capsicum can be counted as a natural herbal remedy in alternative medicines available to help our ailments and relieve our pain.

Fibromyalgia is a complex chronic neurological disorder that generates a wide range of symptoms. Most people with fibromyalgia complain about recidivating muscular pain, rigidity of joints and a generalized state of body weakness. Although these manifestations may point to rheumatoid arthritis, clinical examinations can reveal any signs of physical damage in people with fibromyalgia.

Due to the fact that most medical treatments are unable to overcome fibromyalgia, the disorder is considered to be incurable. However, this belief is far from the truth. Although fibromyalgia is a serious disorder with a pronounced chronic character, there are actually effective means of treating it. Acupuncture has proved to be a very reliable form of therapy for fibromyalgia, providing symptomatic relief and preventing the recurrence of the disorder.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice that has been successfully used to treat various illnesses for thousands of years. This oriental therapy can relieve most of the symptoms generated by fibromyalgia in a relatively short period of time. Acupuncture can quickly restore physical and mental balance, improving the overall health of the people who follow this form of therapy.

Acupuncture can quickly ease fibromyalgia pain and fatigue. This form of alternative therapy uses needles to stimulate various nervous centers of the body. In Oriental medicine, it is believed that the internal activity of the organism can be influenced by activating certain points on the body. These points are referred to as “acupuncture points” or “acupoints”. Therapists use acupuncture needles to activate specific acupoints on the body, correcting the activity of the entire organism simply by stimulating the nervous system.

This ancient Chinese practice is very benefic for people affected by fibromyalgia. Acupuncture inhibits fibromyalgia pain by stopping pain impulses from reaching the brain. This form of therapy can also regulate the body’s production of hormones, increasing the levels of serotonin, endorphins and encephalin, which have a very important role in relieving pain. Acupuncture can also improve the blood flow, restoring muscular tonus. Furthermore, acupuncture can help people with fibromyalgia relax, inducing them a state of comfort and wellbeing.

The majority of people affected by fibromyalgia admit that they have experienced an amelioration of their symptoms after only a few sessions of acupuncture. The first symptoms that can be relieved with the means of acupuncture are muscular pain and weakness, rigidity of the joints, and fatigue. After a month of ongoing therapy, acupuncture can also reduce stress, depression and mental confusion.

Chinese therapists claim that acupuncture works on multiple levels, healing the body, mind and spirit altogether, helping people re-achieve their balance. Oriental therapists also state that acupuncture stimulates and increases the vital “chi” energy, improving the overall health of the organism.

Acupuncture is very benefic to people with fibromyalgia and it can quickly alleviate their symptoms. In present, this form of therapy is probably the most effective means of overcoming the disorder.

If you are drawn to complementary and alternative medicine, you are not alone. Alternative medicine colleges are growing in demand as “36 percent of U.S. adults aged 18 years and over use some form of complementary and alternative medicine.” [1] Alternative and complementary medicine therapies that are most commonly sought after include acupuncture, chiropractic, herbal medicine, and nutritional [2] therapies. These professions are frequently taught to students in a number of alternative medicine colleges.

Other courses provided through alternative medicine colleges may be designed for the future homeopathic practitioner or professionally certified massage therapist. However, there are so many fields of study from which to choose, the potential to attaining a quality education at one of several alternative medicine colleges is virtually unlimited.

Currently, a number of alternative medicine colleges provide undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral and independent career training programs. Students who are interested in naturopathic medicine or holistic medicine can gain a comprehensive education and skills through accredited alternative medicine colleges, as well as other complementary medicine schools. Students seeking certification or diploma programs can frequently achieve these goals at alternative medicine colleges, too. For instance, some alternative medicine colleges specifically provide certification courses in massage, herbal medicine and reflexology. Again, the diverse options in education are quite compelling.

Students, who have successfully graduated from one of several alternative medicine colleges, can go onto lucrative and personally rewarding careers that are mutually beneficial in helping patients and clients from all walks of life.

If you (or someone you know) are interested in enrolling in one of several alternative medicine colleges to help find your dream job, let education within fast-growing industries like massage therapy, cosmetology, acupuncture, oriental medicine, Reiki, and others get you started! Explore career school programs near you.

It started with Dr Batra’s Positive Health Clinic about a decade ago and the founder Dr Mukesh Batra is the man who has transformed the image of Homeopathy at least in India. Once it was seen as poor man’s medicine but after the transformation, Homeopathy as offered by Dr Batra and the like is an expensive treatment that claims to cure holistically by natural substance a myriad of illnesses including incurable diseases like hair loss and rheumatoid arthritis. Now a few others have joined the band wagon and the notables are Bakson’s Homeopathy and Dr Health who all enjoy an enviable advantage of being able to openly advertise in main stream media for cure of diseases which is not allowed for the conventional medicine system.

This discriminatory and highly questionable policy of our government and regulators has definitely helped the five star homeopathy clinics to gain market share and turn out to be big businesses for their promoters. We all know despite tremendous advancement in medicine many of the common diseases and conditions are yet not curable and only can be treated to some extent but when someone claims to cure them through some holistic system and natural substance the appeal is huge and that’s why people flock to these clinics hoping against hope that some cure might be there in the knowledge of these self proclaimed prodigal doctors which can change the lives of the affected people.

It is not surprising that these super specialty homeopathy clinics always target the diseases and conditions that are very common in incidence like hair loss yet having very limited treatment success in scientific medicine system. You can clearly see the hype if you closely look at their advertisements. You will see the scramble between these competing homeopathy clinics to claim who has the India’s first trichologist (another bad science) as if only the person who studies a science first can have all the knowledge.

The author has some first hand knowledge about the treatment procedure of Dr Batra’s clinic which raises eyebrows about the genuineness and ethical dimension of the business. If you happen to see a doctor in these clinics you will not be given a prescription and you have to buy the medicines only from them. It sounds very strange but it is true that whether you go for hay fever, eczema, headache or hair loss all the treatment will cost at least few thousands and the same treatment period which is generally one year.

But you need not develop a bias from one incident or an individual experience; there are hundreds of reviews written in product review sites and blogs, which you may read, and find out that many of the actual recipients of treatment in these clinics, have openly questioned the claim and efficacy of this form of medicine. Also there are news in press about raids in Dr Batra’s clinics and recovery of spurious drugs and medicines. So all these put together do not paint a good picture of these marketing oriented homeopathy clinics.

Let us also not forget the fact that the very foundation of homeopathy is yet to be backed by any credible scientific evidence. In most countries including India it is not covered under any insurance scheme and there is strong suspicion in public about the claim of homeopathic water and its healing property.

Despite all this it is highly unfortunate that the Indian consumers are made to fall prey to some unfounded alternative medicine system just because these companies have money and are allowed to advertise in way that is completely illegal otherwise. The holistic way of treatment is highly questionable and so also its natural cure claim but one thing is very clear that super specialty Homeopathy is selling fast in this country of ever increasing affluent middle class who do not have problem to pay a big sum of money if someone can make them feel better and give hope.

I have not seen any study conducted in a scientific way by these clinics which support their tall claims but they are minting money in the name of cure. Also I don’t see any reason why the doctors of these clinics can’t issue a prescription if they consider it be a branch of medicine and not a para science. Many of these questions continue to be unanswered and there is an uncomfortable silence but it does not matter as the repackaged Homeopathy has turned out to be a big money spinner lately.

Mainstream medicine tends to dismiss alternative remedies for arthritis in favour of drug therapy and established treatments. This article discusses some of the alternative therapies available. Do they work or not?

There are many forms of arthritis and it can affect sufferers in different ways and to greater or lesser degrees. One factor is common, however: pain – usually joint pain that can be unremitting and at times severe.

Conventional drug therapy can and does provide a great deal of relief from the joint pain associated with both osteo and rheumatoid arthritis but these drugs can also have unwanted side-effects. Too, many people are wary or uncomfortable at the idea of taking significant amounts of synthetic drugs and turn to what, for want of a better phrase, are termed ‘alternative medicines’.

These alternatives cover a whole spectrum of ingredients and regimes, from acupuncture to Yoga. Here are some details on just a few of them:

Acupuncture. This ancient practice often calls images to the mind of a person riddled with hundreds of needles like a pincushion, yet normally no more than a dozen are used at any one time. How acupuncture works to alleviate pain is not fully understood, though many theories on the subject are based on sound scientific facts.

Bee Venom Therapy. Also known as Apitherapy, BVT concerns the application of honeybee through live bee stings. It is thought that the healing potency of this method relies on the stimulation of the release of cortisol from the adrenal glands.

Cortisol is a natural human hormone that has anti-inflammatory properties and in addition jump-starts the immune system to produce a healing response. It also spurs the production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller.

Magnetic Therapy. The debate about the effectiveness of magnetic therapy for the treatment of arthritic pain rages on and shows no signs of abating. There seems to be little or no scientific evidence that either confirms or denies, in an absolute sense, the effectiveness of magnetic therapy.

Magnetic therapy is not new – far from it. The Ancient Greeks knew of the lodestone and claimed it had healing properties. The Chinese have used magnetic therapies for literally thousands of years. It would seem that if the magnet is indeed of no use in pain relief it is a most enduring medical myth!

Glucosamine. This substance is found in high concentrations in the joints and the theory is that it stimulates essential cartilage formation for joint repair. It has been seen to have beneficial effects on inflammation and arthritic conditions, whilst medical studies indicate that Glucosamine is effective in relieving pain and increasing joint mobility. It is now classed as a dietary supplement.

Yoga. Although to date only a handful of scientific studies have been conducted on the benefits of Yoga to arthritis sufferers (despite any rumour or hearsay), it looks like more are either currently underway or about to begin. Existing studies do indicate an improvement of physical function and reduction in joint pain. However, the most positive aspect of Yoga therapy appears, according to the reports, to be the improvement to the quality of life of the sufferer.

So what should an arthritis sufferer do? On the one hand – accepted medical treatment. On the other – alternative treatment that may or may not be effective. It unfortunately falls to the individual to decide, though it should be remembered that a life spent in almost constant pain can cloud judgement. This author advises that before making any change, small or radical, to any medical regime, the advice of a medical professional or arthritis specialist should be sought.
