Rheumatoid Arthritis is a Joint Disorder, which affects Multiple Joints at various sites. It is described as “Amavata” in Ayurveda. The word ‘Ama’ means Toxic material generated as a un wholesome product in the body due to weakening of digestive fire. This ‘Ama’ is then carried by ‘Vayu’ and travels throughout the body and accumulates in the joints, which is the seat of ‘Kapha’. As this process continuous, all the Joints are gradually affected, which results in Severe Pain and Swelling in the Joints. When ‘Pitta’ also gets aggravated, it causes Burning Sensation around the Joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common of several autoimmune diseases that primarily affect the joints.
It is characterized by abnormal inflammatory responses that damage the synovial lining of the joints and other tissues. Components of the immune system mistakenly identify normal body tissues as potentially harmful organisms and attack them causing substantial collateral damage.
This results in joint pain, swelling and permanent damage to joint cartilage and the underlying bone. Other parts of the body such as the blood, nerves and heart may also be affected in severe cases.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints. Autoimmune diseases are illnesses where the body attacks its own immune system. The autoimmune system is made up of cells that destroy invaders such as infections. Patients with autoimmune diseases have antibodies in their blood that attack their body tissues that are usually the sight of inflammation; this can occur in organs as well, not just the joints. RA can affect the eyes, skin, heart, and lungs. Arthritis means joint inflammation whereas rheumatoid arthritis causes redness, swelling, stiffness, and pain in the joint. Inflammation in the joints causes swelling, pain, and tenderness to the touch and during movement. It is possible to have a warm feeling at the sight of the inflammation and restricted movement. RA can also cause inflammation in tendons, ligaments, and muscles around the joints.
Rheumatoid arthritis is common in the United States affecting more than one million people and it affects all races equally, though women are three times more likely than men to suffer from this disease. It can affect someone at any age, but typically occurs after the age of 40 and before 60. Nobody knows the cause of RA, but scientists suggest it is genetically inherited. Some environmental factors increase your chances of getting RA such as smoking tobacco.

I am currently 29 weeks pregnant, and am having a bad flare up of rheumatoid arthritis at the moment. My rheumatologist has prescribed me 10mg of prednisolone a day ( i’m currently not taking any meds at all) I haven’t started taking them yet as i am scared they will do something to the baby. She has told me they are safe to take during pregnancy, and i’m getting pretty desperate as i am in quite a lot of pain, i just don’t know what to do????
Jill, it’s not that i don’t trust my doctor it’s that i feel terribly guilty about taking any sort of medication while i am pregnant, i don’t drink and i don’t smoke to protect the health of my baby so it just concerned me as to any effects pred may have had on my baby
Julie k, yes she does know i am pregnant she has been looking after me since before i was pregnant
Thank you Jill, i just needed a bit of reassurance

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects joints of a human body. The disease causes inflammation in and around joints, which result in decreased mobility.
As in all autoimmune diseases, the body tissues are mistakenly attacked by its own immune system. Rheumatoid arthritis can also cause inflammation of tissues present in other organs in the body. That is the reason why this disease is sometimes referred as systematic illness. Rheumatoid arthritis cures, if any, are possible only by early diagnosis and timely treatment.
Causes
In rheumatoid arthritis, specific antibodies present in the blood begin to attack the healthy tissues of the body. The disease starts with pain and inflammation in joints. As it progresses, it starts affecting the muscles and other organs also. The disease normally attacks people who are between 40 to 60 years of age. Wrists and hands are some of the first joints to be attacked. This condition can be genetic, but there are other factors as well (like smoking) that lead to its onset.

There are more than 100 different kinds of arthritis. Most of them involve inflammation. When a patient goes to a rheumatologist to get a diagnosis, there is a process of elimination in order to arrive at the proper diagnosis. This process of elimination is called “differential diagnosis.”
Differential diagnosis can be a difficult undertaking because so many forms of arthritis, particularly inflammatory forms of arthritis look alike. The following is a list of types of inflammatory arthritis that can be seen and must be considered when evaluating a patient with inflammatory symptoms of arthritis.
